The Strength & Conditioning Handbook for Combat Sports by geoffrey chiu

Conditioning for Combat Sports

Strength & Conditioning for combat sports can be a complex landscape that requires careful planning, communication and monitoring to keep athletes healthy, improve their performance and prepare them for competition.

A big mistake fighters make with their S&C is following a program that sacrifices skill development in order to develop strength, power and endurance.

Even though their performance in the weight room may improve, the quality of technical skills training and sparring suffers, leading to subpar performance.

This is exactly why I created this ebook.

To compile various training philosophies and methodologies I’ve used successfully working with various combat sport athletes around the world, to help you with your journey to high performance.

I’m Geoffrey, owner of GC Performance Training.

I am a life-long martial artist and dedicated strength & conditioning coach based out of Vancouver, Canada and London, UK. In the world of combat sports, I’ve worked with amateur and professional athletes in boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

I am constantly learning from world-class coaches in both the combat sports and S&C industries so that I can bridge the gap between skill and athletic development.

My goal is to utilize pragmatic training methods and planning systems to further elevate the current landscape and paradigms of combat sports.

With this manual, Geoffrey has pooled a mix of contemporary science, pragmatism and old school knowledge. This is a great resource for coaches and combat athletes to glean actionable information that will make a real impact on athletes and coach understanding of what constitutes proper S&C for combat athletes. It is presented in a straight forwards manner without too much baffling hard science or unrelatable anecdotes.

Geoffrey has outdone himself and I can recommend this to anyone interested in the subject of combat sports performance

Geoffrey is one of the few coaches I see apply a practical application of strength & conditioning and skill development, creating unison of systems. No longer are the days of the strength guy or the conditioning guy!

This e-book is a great starting point for skills coaches, s&c coaches and athletes looking to make sense of a clouded industry. Geoffrey uses original ideas combined with a strong evidence base to create a training blueprint that works in practice no matter what facilities the athlete has access to.

On a personal level (as both an s&c coach and a professional athlete) Geoffrey is one of the coaches I admire highly for his original approach and ethical pursuit of excellence in the industry.

As S&C for combat sports becomes more and more popular I find myself learning from an ever decreasing circle of people.

Where most prioritise sexy marketing, empty promises and an endless list of specific exercises that will apparently transform an athlete, Geoff focuses on the real nuts and bolts of working with combat athletes and the areas you can make a genuine impact.

If you are a novice coach wanting to work with combat athletes, a martial art head coach or an experienced S&C coach, ‘The Strength & Conditioning Handbook for Combat Sports’ is a brilliant resource that offers genuine value for money.

Geoffrey did a great job combining the technical aspects of training and the skill side of training. So many coaches are simply winging it and unintentionally hurting their athletes careers.

This book will help you understand combat sports, the demands of each sport, scheduling, collaborating with other coaches and more. A must-read for any coach or athlete looking to improve their approach.
